The Prince Rupert Curling Club was rockin’ on Nov. 26 as Curl BC hosted an Optimist I Rock The House curling clinic.

Twelve junior curlers took part in the event, which is designed to teach them the basics, rules and fundamental skills of the game.

“We taught them the grip turn release, we taught them brushing, we taught them balance and coordination and how to generate power,” said Al Kersey, the Curl BC learning facilitator and coach developer who ran the clinic.

Kersey led a morning session of teaching alongside club member Danny Dawson, who said all the kids, whether they were beginners or more experienced, learned something new.

“To have someone who goes all over British Columbia, and parts of Canada as well, and brings back techniques from different provinces is really good to have,” he said.

Following the morning session, the group split up for lunch and then played a game of bocce curling, a fun spin on the popular garden game, and then played a final game to help the students put their skills to work.

“It was a lot of fun, it was a really good experience and I feel it’s really going to benefit me,” said Tiona Holkestad, one of the clinics participants who also helped to instruct.
