A relationship agreement between the Kitsumkalum First Nation and the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) was confirmed publicly on Feb. 28, just over a year after it was signed at a ceremony hosted by the First Nation.

The agreement, which signified a mutual understanding of the two parties’ interests, was signed in February 2023, though only publicized by the PRPA on Feb. 28.

While Kitsumkalum’s headquarters are just west of Terrace, the First Nation holds claims to current and historical presence on the North Coast. The First Nation said this is an important step toward reconciliation and trust.

“The Port operates on lands and waters within Tsimshian Territory,” said Don Roberts, chief of Kitsumkalum.

“And this agreement will build on Kitsumkalum’s role in the economy of the Port and provide for collaborative strategic planning and management of the lands and resources in a way that recognizes and respects our respective rights, values, and interests.”

PRPA representatives attended the signing ceremony on Kitsumkalum territory last February, which also included a feast. Hereditary and elected leaders were present, according to the PRPA’s press release.

President and CEO of the PRPA Shaun Stevenson said the agreement is an excellent platform for the two groups to build on for the future.

“This agreement symbolizes a significant milestone for PRPA and the partnership that we continue to build with Kitsumkalum,” said Stevenson.

No details were given on what kind of actions may be taken as a result of the agreement.
