Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii festivals, fairs and events are receiving more than $200,000 in grants from a new B.C. recovery funding program to help events resume in the North Coast, the province announced on Dec. 13.

“The new support from the provincial government will help local fairs, festivals and community events resume in North Coast,” Jennifer Rice, North Coast MLA, said.

“The pandemic made it more challenging for people to gather for events and enjoy all the arts and culture the North Coast has to offer,” she said. “This new funding will help support local fairs, festivals and events, allowing us all to safely come together again as a community.”

Five North Coast festivals and events will benefit from the grants.

In Prince Rupert, the BC Annual Dance Competition received $16,000 and the Prince Rupert Regional Swim Meet was awarded $4,000 in funding.

In Haida Gwaii, the Tluu Xaada Naay gwii kyuuwee (the Trail to Canoe People’s House Celebration) received $166,160.As well, the Edge of the World Music Festival was granted $15,000 with the Tlell Fall Fair awarded $4,540.

Successful recipients demonstrated the economic and social benefits of their event with local or regional support. Some of the eligible expenses included operational costs, health and safety measures, venue rental, marketing, wages and promotion, the province stated.

These events are among 680 others in B.C. to receive part of nearly $30 million of provincial investment in one-time grants to support efforts to resume safely. Grant amounts for each event are up to 20 per cent of the total event budget, up to a maximum of $250,000.
