Shames Mountain opening weekend delayed due to lack of snow

The ski and snowboard season has been put on hold

Don’t jump into your bindings just yet.

Shames Mountain has delayed their opening weekend from Dec. 8 – 9 to Dec. 15 – 16 due to the mild conditions that have been keeping the snow off the hill.

But even that isn’t guaranteed.

“There’s a lot of people who want to know when we’re going to open and we wish we had an exact answer, but all we can say is that we can only hope for that date,” says Christian Theberge, general manager at Shames Mountain.

According to Theberge, the forecast is predicting 50 cm to 1 m of substantial snowfall to arrive between this Saturday and Thursday at the mountain.

“Once the snow comes, we need three to four days of working that snow and moving it around before we can open.”

When the snow makes its appearance, the co-op is expected to remain open until April.

As for what winter-enthusiasts can look forward to this season, Theberge says that ‘Thrilling Thursdays’ will continue throughout January and February and that the co-op will give out free lift tickets for New Year’s Day in exchange for a non-perishable food item.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community that has helped us so much and it’s important to donate in a time where food banks are depleted and need to be filled up again.”

Dates have yet to be announced for the fundraiser events that will be held to raise money for the “magic carpet” conveyor lift for beginners. The bunny hill will continue with its free-entry.

The only day that Shames Mountain will be closed is on Christmas Day.
