The Charles Hays Senior Boys basketball team had another dominant weekend, overcoming two sluggish starts to beat the Caledonia Kermodes in back-to-back games on Jan. 18 and 19.
The Rainmakers had to overcome a relatively slow start in the first game, and to a four point 19-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and a two-point, 30-28 lead at the half. Coach Ryan Bishop said the team was not as sharp as they could be, allowing the Kermodes to keep pace at the beginning of the game.

“It’s hard right? Every team we play will be looking to play their hardest,” Bishop said. “We have to make sure we come into all games and play at the level we are capable of not the level of who we are playing.”
Bishop said he stressed the importance of focusing to his team during half time, and they came out with more intensity in the third quarter.
The Rainmakers allowed Caledonia to score only two point in the third period, which allowed them to stretch out their lead to a 16-point, 56-30 advantage.
The Rainmakers held Caledonia to only 7 points in the fourth to cruise to a comfortable 71-37 victory.
The two teams met again in a rematch the next day. Similarly to the first game, the Rainmakers had trouble pulling away from their opponents even though they had a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Despite not dominating the way they’ve become accustomed to this season, the Rainmakers were able to hold Caledonia off down the stretch to win the game 85-73.
The team next flies to Vancouver where they will play in the Vancouver College Emerald Tournament. Bishop says he is feeling confident about the team’s chances heading into the tournament.
“I think the guys are at a good place at the moment,” Bishop said.
