Rainmakers dominant over the weekend

Junior and Senior boys basketball teams score victories over Prince George

The Rainmakers train was rolling over the weekend.

The Charles Hays Rainmakers asserted their basketball dominance over the Prince George Secondary School Polars with a pair of entertaining basketball wins Jan. 11 and 12.

The Rainmaker’s first victory was a comprehensive, 92-72 win which saw the team put up 32 first-quarter points while holding the Polars below 20.

Head coach Ryan Bishop said he was happy that his team were ready to play and showed intensity from the beginning of the game.

The Rainmakers built on their advantage throughout the second quarter, extending their lead to 59-42 at the break.

The second half was more of the same. Bishop said the Rainmakers guards were able to beat their men off the dribble and set up their teammates for quality opportunities.

The Rainmakers maintained their advantage in the second half to come away with the victory. Forwards, Liam McChesney and Kai Leighton, led the way for the Rainmakers with 34 and 27 points respectively.

The team was even more dominant in their second game against the polars, jumping out to an early advantage once again before pulling away in the second half to record an 83-52 victory.

McChesney and Leighton were the teams high scorers once again with 30 and 26 points. Tyler Jones also provided a spark off the bench, scoring eight points.

The team’s focus shifts to Terrace this weekend where they will take on the Caledonia Kermodes before travelling to Vancouver on Jan. 23.

Junior Boys dominant

The junior Rainmakers also turned in quality performances against Prince George’s junior team. The Rainmakers beat Prince George 80-53 in the team’s first game.

“We moved the basketball really well, especially from east to west,” said head coach Kevin Sawka.

Rylan Adams, Caden Pagens and Karan Baines led the team in scoring with 20 points, 23 points and 10 points apiece.

“Our penetration is really fantastic right now,” Sawka said. “The kids are really working hard right now.”

The team was equally dominant in the second game, winning 69-48. Rylan Adams was the lead scorer once again with 29 points.

The team’s focus now shifts to the weekend where they will travel to Vancouver to play in the annual North Shore Invitational Tournament.

Sawka said the tournament is always a good barometer of the team’s progress through the season as they will be playing against some of the province’s top ranked teams. He added that the tournament is also an opportunity for the team to increase its own ranking ahead of zones and provincials.

“The mission is always to get inside the top ten,” he said.
