Raiders win Kitimat tournament

The Prince Rupert Raiders women’s hockey team finished their 2017-2018 season on a high note this weekend, going 3-0 on the road to take first place in the women’s division at the annual Kitimat Oldtimers Hockey League Tournament.

The team’s first win was a 7-1 victory against the Kitimat Extreme. Brittany Waite led the team in scoring with three goals, Jordyn Carter and Akemi Storey each added a goal and an assist. Janice Fudger chipped in with a goal and Payton Collussi, Tristen Repole and Alisha Kennedy contributed an assist each.

The Raiders got off to a slower start in their second game against the Terrace Blizzards, conceding three first period goals to trail 3-2 going into the second. The team was able to regroup during the intermission and dominated over the last two periods to win the game 8-3. Waite led the way again with five goals and an assist, Fudger added a two goals and assist, Repole added a goal and two assists and Jordyn Carter and Nicole Wagner added an assist each.

The Raiders won their third and final game 11-2 against Kitimat No Frills, consistently controlling the puck and being accurate with their passes. Fudger led the way for the Raiders with four goals and two assists, Waite added three goals and four assists, Repole added two goals and five assists and Beckwith added a goal and an assist.

Team coach Troy O’Toole said he was very happy with his team’s performance over the weekend, particularly how they responded to adversity after being down early in their second game.

“This tournament win was an overall team effort,” he said. “I am very proud of how this team continues to grow and represent themselves in a competitive and positive manner.”
