The Prince Rupert Amateur Swim Club (PRASC) Rapids hosted it’s annual invitational meet June 2-4. Head coach Chris Street said the local meet gives its younger swimmers an opportunity to taste competition for the first time while the club’s older competitors can fine-tune their strokes for upcoming meets.
“For our younger kids this is it, this is their meet,” he said. “It’s a big deal for them. It’s where they get an opportunity to experience racing and get better and improve.”
Street said the younger competitors handled the pressure of racing well.
“There was really good energy on deck,” he said. “We didn’t have a whole bunch of tears, nobody balked at their swims. It was a very successful meet in terms of getting our little kids transitioned from learning to swim to learning to compete.”
PRASC swimmers took home top aggregate honours across the board over the weekend. Iona Riesen won the gold aggregate medal in the 10-and-under womens division with 49 points while Kobe Ikari took home the gold aggregate medal in the 10-and-under boys division.
Natalie DeMille had the highest aggregate score of 49 points for the 11-12 girls while Jakob Hall had the highest aggregate score of 47 points for the 11-12 boys. Renese Ebanks’ 49 points was the highest aggregate score in the 13-14 girls division while Isaac Mastroianni’s 44 points was the highest in the 13-14 boys division.
In the boys and girls 15-and-over division, Amy Leighton’s 49 points and Zachary Dolan’s 42 points took home top honours respectively. The Terrace and Kitimat swim clubs were unable to attend the meet due to prior commitments.
