Several Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) athletes took to Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers last week for the North Zone provincial qualifiers.

On the girls side, Carolyn Platzer was the lone Rupert contestant. She put in runs of 63.15 and 1:03.81 to finish with a time of 126.46. She finished 18th out of  25 girls.

Four boys were also registered to hit the slopes, but Hayden Neil did not start. Oak Adams had a good showing. The snowboarder finished his first run with a time of 52.11, which was one of the top run times in the competition. In his second run, he raced to a 55.17 finish, good for an overall time of 107.28. The strong showing placed him fifth out of 39 snowboarders who raced.

Maxwell Young had a good showing as well, with times of 58.44 and 59.88 for a final time of 118.32, good for 15th place.

Wyatt Whitcomb was the final CHSS boarder. He raced to times of 57.60 and 59.03, equaling 116.63. He finished in 11th place.

Because provincial qualifications go by team instead of individual, none of the Rupert athletes will be advancing. The Smithers group of athletes won the competition.
