Chilliwack team takes provincial curling title in Prince Rupert

Last week, the Prince Rupert Curling Club hosting the 2011 Williams Moving and Storage Mixed Provincial Championship that had eight teams from all around the Province competing for the top spot.

On Saturday, March 19, skip Doug Marshall’s team from Chilliwack were awarded the winning plaque after a week of fierce playing.

In third place this year was   the team from Kimberley, consisting of Lori Buchy, Dave Toffolo, Robyn Toffolo, led by skip Tom Buchy. Team Buchy secured themselves to earn at least the third-place spot after playing a draw against Sparwood team led by skip Ken McHargue on Friday, winning 7 to 6.

However, Buchy did not win when they played against Duncan team led by skip Wes Craig on Saturday. The final score for Saturday’s draw was 9 to 4 for Craig, securing Sarah Wark, Will Duggan, Roselyn Craig, skip Wes Craig’s position as the runner-up.

Craig then took on Chilliwack team consisting of Lisa Deputan, Darren Jarvis, Janet Klebe, and skip Doug Marshall on Saturday, in the final draw. Marshall’s teams came out competing strongly, with Craig not receiving any points until the fifth end. In the end, Marshall earned themselves 11 points, while Craig had 3.

“We are pretty excited, we didn’t expect to win. Two of us have never even been to a tournament before.” Commented Doug. “This is the best we’ve ever played, even better than in the zones.”

Marshall and the rest of his team now have the opportunity to take part in Nationals, which are being held in Montreal this November.
