Olav (Ole) Rysstad passed away peacefully June 12, 2017, in Prince Rupert Hospital with family at his side. Ole was born September 15, 1922, in Rysstad, Norway to Turid & Bjorgulv Rysstad. The family, including siblings Tarjier, Torgier, and Knut, immigrated to Canada, settling in Prince Rupert in 1927. As a young boy, Ole attended the original Seal Cove Elementary School, and as a teenager, fished and logged with his father. During WW2 Ole enlisted with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. He was sent overseas and was involved in many key battles including the well documented fierce battle for Ortona, Italy. Ole later went on to the liberation of Holland before returning home. Inspite being a decorated soldier he seldom spoke of his experiences. After the war, Ole settled down, married his love Maxine (nee Kerrighan) in 1947 and went on to raise 6 boys. Ole had the Pacific Troller built in Cow Bay, and with 6 boys he always had a crew through his long successful fishing career. Ole was well known and respected amongst the fleet having helped many throughout the years. Ole was a strong patient man with a firm handshake and a smile for everyone. His blue eyes, smile & laugh will always be missed. In 2002, Ole suffered a stroke and shortly after he lost Maxine. His son Norm took on the task of caring for Ole considering it a privilege and an honor. Norm’s dedication to Ole’s well-being extended his father’s life as well as the quality of his life. Ole is predeceased by his wife Maxine, sons Ole Jr & Neil.Survived by sons Tom/(Jean), Dave, Norm, Alan/(Trudy) as well as grandchildren Maggie, Dylan, Dean, Brittany, Aaron, Alana, Ole and Joran and 9 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Thank you to the staff in all the departments at the Prince Rupert Hospital. Also, thank you to Dr Ikari and all the caring Doctors and nurses who gave Ole excellent care, & the lab techs for all the smiley faces. A family gathering will be at a later date.
