In loving memory ~
It is with profound sadness that our family shares the news of the passing of our beloved husband, father, Papa, brother, mentor and friend.
In the early morning of September 23, while held tenderly in Mom's loving arms, Dad slipped away to find his peace following his battle with Alzheimers Disease.
Born in northern New Brunswick, Dad left home at 17 to live and work with his uncle in Mississauga, Ontario. There he met a cute little redhead who quickly stole his heart. He married Bonnie in 1963. They welcomed daughter Elaine that same year with Norman's arrival following in 1965. In 1968, while mom was visiting her parents in BC, dad decided to follow a dream to go west. He sold all they owned, (including all the kid's clothes) called Mom in Prince Rupert and told her to stay put; he was coming to join her there. He worked at the Prince Rupert Airport as part of the fire crew. For a brief period in 1970, we returned to New Brunswick and while there, youngest daughter Brenda was born. When Brenda was just a few weeks old, Dad got a call for work at Skeena Cellulose back in Prince Rupert and we were on the road again. This time, Dad was back to stay. After a few years at the mill, he decided to return to firefighting and joined the City of Prince Rupert Fire Department where he remained until he retired as captain after more than 25 years of service.
Dad's dedication to his family and friends knew no bounds. He worked hard all his life for the love of his family. Throughout his years, Dad volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, hockey coach, was a member of the Kinsman Club and a long-time member of the ice crew at the PR Curling Club. Dad was an avid reader of western novels and kept active playing hockey, softball, golf and curling. He had a great love of the outdoors and as a family, we enjoyed many years of camping and fishing. He was a lifelong hunter and hunted with his group for nearly 50 years, these men became his greatest of friends.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Robert & Beatrice Flann (Kingston), stepfather Arnold Kingston, sisters Anne Grennan and Joan Phillips and son-in-law Dave Pedersen. He is survived by his wife Bonnie who was his sweetheart for more than 60 years, children Elaine (John), Norman (Carmen) and Brenda (Garret), sisters Lois (Brenda), Mona and brother Rick (Tracey). Papa also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Blake (Kale), Jessica (Pam), Jared, Megan (Max) and Chase. He will also be missed by his sisters-in-law Marilyn & MaryAnne, brother-in-law Wayne, many nieces and nephews, his hunting crew and his dear life-long friends.
We will forever miss his guidance in our lives and his smile in our day.
A gathering to celebrate the life of our dad will be held on Saturday, October 15th from 4-7pm in the upstairs lounge of the Prince Rupert Curling Club. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in Dad's memory at https://alzheimer.ca/en/take-action/donate or mail to Alzheimer Society of Canada, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, 16th Floor, Toronto, ON M4R 1K8
