February 22, 1936 - February 17, 2019
Ingrid was born in Werbenthal, the Czech Republic in 1936. At age 19 she travelled from Europe on the Canada Line Seven Seas Ship to arrive in Prince Rupert on June 28th, 1956 by train.

Mom worked at the laboratory in the Old Prince Rupert Hospital on 5th Ave East, where now sit townhouses.

Ingrid met her future husband to be, Joseph Bernkopf, who came to Prince Rupert from Europe in 1952, through mutual friends while visiting with Joe at his cabin on Mount Blaine. Ingrid and Joe were married on January 15th, 1960 and had two children, Bernie and Jo-Ann (Evan). Her grandchildren are Joseph and Jordanna.

Ingrid and Joe lived in Prince Rupert throughout their marriage and moved to Rainbow Lake in 1995 where they lived until Joe's death in 2008. Shortly after Ingrid moved to Rosswood for 2 years and then to Smithers where she resided until August 2018. In September 2018 Mom moved back to Prince Rupert where she resided with Jo-Ann and Evan.

Ingrid loved Smithers and her gardens and made many wonderful close friends while there. Ingrid was very active in the Smither's community and belonged to the hiking club; volunteered at the library and was always available to lend a hand where needed. Smithers was where Ingrid's heart was, and she had planned to move back there in the spring of 2019. Unfortunately, this was not to be.

Ingrid had a life long passion for attaining knowledge and insights without limit.

She maintained a positive attitude and cheerful continence despite the hardships experienced as a child growing up in war torn country.

Ingrid believed that everything happened for a reason and there was good in everything. Her motto was always 'this or better'.

She had a great love of books; gardening and the education of children.

Mom passed away peacefully at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends at her passing.

Ingrid will be greatly missed and forever remembered in our hearts and never forgotten.

Ingrid leaves behind family in the US, her sister, Margarethe (George); in Germany, her brother, Heinz, his daughter, Sylvia and son Bernd, her sister Holda (Jurgen) their sons Bernd and Jorg, and many friends throughout BC, Canada, the US and Europe.

Many thanks to the wonderful nursing Staff at the Prince Rupert Hospital, 3rd Floor for all of their care, support and compassion and to Dr C Piek and J Piek and Dr Smith who devoted much time and energy towards Ingrid's well being.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Ingrid on Sunday, March 24th at the Crest Hotel in the BC Room from 11 am to 3 pm. All who knew Ingrid as friends or acquaintances are welcome to attend to share memories, laughter, and stories.
