August 12, 1934 - August 13, 2019
Fred passed away peacefully in Prince Rupert hospital on Aug 13th, one day after his 85th birthday.
Fred was born in Kirchdorf, Austria and apprenticed as a pastry chef before immigrating to Canada in 1954. He joined his brothers Reinhard and Walter and his sister Johanna in British Columbia and soon decided to make Canada his home. Fred met his wife, Gesine, while travelling by ship from Europe to New York. They married in November 1963, in Bonn, Germany, and returned to Canada, settling in Prince Rupert, B.C., where they raised their three children.
Fred was an avid fisherman, both recreationally and commercially. After commercial fishing, Fred worked as a cake decorator at Canada Safeway in Prince Rupert until his retirement. Some mornings you would hear him on the radio as one of the "Master Bakers" for Safeway's Big Blue Birthday book cake give-away.
Fred spent many days camping, fishing, crabbing, hunting, and playing cards with friends and family. He enjoyed spending time in his garden. He always had a smile on his face and was happy to visit and share his smoked salmon.
Fred will be missed by wife Gesine, children Mike (Paula), Sandra (Brian), Wilfred (Elisa), grandchildren Graham, Janel, and Tyler, and all those who knew him.
The Gaubes wish to thank Dr. John Fawell and all the health care providers who helped care for Fred during his illness, including ambulance attendants, emergency room staff, and especially the nurses. Thank you all for your caring and compassion.
As per Fred's wishes, there will be no memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
