In Loving Memory ~
Gian Mario (John) Marogna passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. on November 29th, 2022.
John was born to parents Mario and Giustina (nee Paganin) Marogna on May 7th, 1940. He was born in Asiago, Italy, in the Dolomites in Northern Italy, where John became very good at winter sports like skiing and skating.
He was the youngest of 7: sisters Lidia and Mara, and brothers Ceasare, Antonio (Tony), Giuliano and Franco (Frank).
John was a successful businessman; he formed Marogna Bros. Construction with his brother Tony, and later Marcan Construction with his sons, Paul and Aaron. He was also involved in other industries as well, such as commercial property development and rental.
John was positively engaged in the community. He was a member of many services and clubs: Rotary International, Lions Club, Toastmasters, Downtown Development Committee, Prince Rupert Construction Association, Canadian Institute of Speech, and Old Timers Hockey League, to name a few.
He was also integral in both the local Italo Canadian Club and The National Congress of Italo Canadians. John was the Honorary Consular Agent for Italy for Northern B.C. for nearly 4 decades. He was also instrumental in creating a school for Italian children in Prince Rupert.
John enjoyed many sports activities, like hockey and skiing. Many memories were made with close family friends when their families would visit ski hills in B.C.
Up until his late 70s, John was still out skiing those many decades younger than him. Last Christmas, John (in his 80s) showed off his skating skills on Lakelse Lake with family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Mario and Giustina Marogna, and his brother Ceasare. He is also preceded in death by his late wife of 52 years, Shirley (nee Kingerski).
John leaves behind two sons, Paul and Aaron (Jean) as well as his three granddaughters: Olivia, Nadia, and Bianca. John is also survived by 5 of his siblings; his three brothers, Antonio (Tony), Giuliano and Franco (Frank), and sisters Lidia and Mara. He will be sadly missed by his many family and friends.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and staff at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital for their dedicated care of Dad during his stay.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to Diabetes Canada in John's name.
The family invites all who knew John to join us in a celebration of his life at The Lester Centre of the Arts on Saturday, January 7th at 2:00 p.m. (doors open at 1:00 p.m.).
Everyone is welcome to join and share their stories of Dad at this event.
