Elmo Guinan, 87 years old, passed away on December 1st, 2024 at the Comox Valley Hospital. Elmo was predeceased by his wife Valerie, his daughter Lorraine and his grandson Zachary, and is survived by his three sons, their wives and five grandsons.
Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka on April 10th, 1937, Elmo was one of seven children. At age 17, he immigrated to England and apprenticed as an electrician, eventually marrying and having four children; Darrell, Roger, Lorraine and David.
After a successful career in England, Elmo followed his dreams to Canada, moving to Prince Rupert in 1976 to work at the pulp mill. He stayed in that job for 25 years until his retirement, when he moved to Comox with his second wife, Valerie.
An avid cricket player, Elmo represented his region at the BC Summer and Senior's Games for many years. At the ripe old age of 50, Elmo found his calling in the game of golf. He was a long-time member at the Prince Rupert Golf Course, a Glacier Greens Golf Club member for many years and recently became a member at Sunnydale Golf Club.
He is famous for his two holes in one and the one at The Jubilee Tournament in Prince Rupert earned him $10K in diamonds and the moniker "Diamond Guinan". It is still the only hole in one over the 30 year history of the Tournament. Those close to him just called him "Slo-mo," as he was never in a hurry, especially on the golf course. His lack of pace, however, was overshadowed by his generosity at the 19th hole, his "happy place," as he would always buy rounds for whoever happened to be at his table.
Elmo was able to golf, socialize, and live on his own until the very end, and that's what he always wanted. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of a service, a celebration of life will be held in the spring (date and time TBD) at Sunnydale Golf Club, following a round of golf in his honour for those who'd like to partake.
