October 9, 1921 - March 18, 2022
In his 101st year, David passed away peacefully and comfortably in the early hours of Friday March 18th, in the company of his family. Predeceased by Beth, his wife of 65 years, and his daughter Sonja, he was a devoted brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather. He spent his life in the service of his country and in many aspects of international development.
David's first exposure to public service was as a (under-aged) soldier with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada during the Second World War. During the Italian Campaign he was shot and reported as killed in action. Many months later, luckily for all of us, it became known that he was actually a prisoner of war.
He later was employed in the Public Service Commission where, notably, he hired the first female letter carriers in Canada. His service with the federal government's Bureau of Management Consultants and his later role as a private consultant enabled him to share his expertise, his compassion towards his fellow man and his gentle sociability with a variety of countries, including Nigeria, Belize, Bangladesh, Turkey, Laos, and Belgium. After living and working abroad for over 30 years, primarily on Mallorca, Spain, he and his late wife Beth moved to Prince Rupert in 2003. There he became an active member of the community, made many friends and hosted numerous social events.
David's other passions included sailing, gardening, bee keeping, wine making and advocating for recognizing the national significance of the Barrett Point Battery emplacements - known locally as "The Forts".
David's children Andree, Maury, Renee, Mijo and Melanie wish to express their deep appreciation for the most excellent care he received while residing at the Acropolis Manor.
A celebration of David's life is planned for Saturday 4-7pm, 26 March 2022, at the Crest Hotel.
Donations in memoriam may be made to the PURS Prince Rupert (Paws United Rescue Society) or the Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter.
