More than 800 households in Prince Rupert were without power this morning as winds gusted up to 100 kilometres per hour.

The most visible cause of the outage is a tree that fell on the wires beside the bridge on 2nd Ave. West. The result is an outage affecting 141 households along 2nd Ave. West and Water street that is expected to be in place until noon. Another outage, stretching from Mount Hays to the far side of Park Ave. has caused an outage to 656 customers. Nine households in the Sloan/Omenica area remain without power.

As well as power outages, Fairview Terminal is sitting idle, as does a line of trucks carrying containers to the site.

"Fairview operations were suspended last night in anticipation of the high winds and will not resume until the wind falls to an acceptable level," said Prince Rupert Port Authority manager of corporate communications Michael Gurney, noting tugs are in the harbour to support large vessels anchored in Prince Rupert.

"Our priority at the port authority is safety, and we're happy to see how this has been carried out."

BC Ferries was scheduled to travel to Haida Gwaii last night, but that trip was cancelled due to the wind and the Northern Adventure sits tied up at the Prince Rupert terminal.

Along with the power outages, smaller trees and signs were blown over around town.
