Update: As of 1:33 this afternoon, all pool facilities at the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre in Prince Rupert are open to the public.

The Earl Mah Aquatic Centre in Prince Rupert will be closed throughout the day and much of tomorrow following what Director of Recreation and Community Services Rudy Kelly called "a serious fecal incident".

"Because of the nature of the incident it is going to take a lot longer and a much higher dose of chlorine to get rid of it and make sure that it stays gone," said Kelly, noting that the amount of chlorine needed will make the entirety of the swimming area - including the hot tub and saunas - unusable.

"We're hoping it will be usable again tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon."

While the pool will be closed, the weight room upstairs will be open provided the chlorine smell does not become overwhelming. People wanting to make use of the weight room are asked to contact the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre at 250-627-SWIM (7946) for an update to ensure it is still open.
