Prince Rupert's nursing home was recently hit with an outbreak in influenza.

Northern Health is currently managing an outbreak of influenza at Acropolis Manor.

There has been lab testing for Influenza A, and although the care facility is not shut off from the public, visitors are asked to delay any non-urgent visits.

Staff and family members have been notified, and signage is in place around the building. Group social activities have been cancelled for the time being.

“We’ve had no new cases for the past few days. We’re hoping the outbreak will be over soon,” said Eryn Collins, communications officer for Northern Health.

However, Northern Health was unable to confirm if there is an outbreak beyond the nursing home, despite several other incidences of influenza and respiratory illnesses reported throughout the city.

Discovery Child Care closed its doors Thursday and Friday last week due to influenza. On Feb. 24, Conrad Elementary School issued a notice to parents and guardians warning of a "spike in gastrointestinal illnesses" and tips on how to reduce the spread of viruses — notably Norovirus.

Medical health officer Dr. Andrew Gray tells parents in the letter that if their child is sick, stay at home and avoid public gatherings.
