Tour promotes tanker ban

LIBERAL MP Joyce Murray is on her way to Prince Rupert as part of a tour to oppose any move to allow tankers on the north coat.

"In 1972, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau established a moratorium on oil tanker traffic on British Columbia’s north coast. Today these waters are home to a unique ecosystem—one that supports the livelihoods of thousands of people living in the region," reads a press release.

"The importance of protecting these waters cannot be over-stated: a major oil spill would change BC forever," it continues.

"Stephen Harper’s Conservative government does not recognize the moratorium. Bill C-606 will make an oil tanker ban on the north coast law," the press release continues in outlining a bill Murray is introducing in parliament.

Murray is at the Crest Hotel March 18 beginning at 7:30 pm.

The tour includes stops in Kitimat, Sidney, Parksville, Cowichan Bay and Campbell River.
