Three quakes rattle Haida Gwaii

USGS confirms three 4-plus magnitude earthquakes hit Haida Gwaii

A series of earthquakes again rocked Haida Gwaii late Thursday afternoon.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the island was shaken by three earthquakes, two 4.5 magnitude and one 4.4 magnitude quake.

The USGS said the three quakes happened in three distinct areas. The first quake at 5:05 p.m. registered 4.5 on the Richter Scale at a depth of 10.2 kilometres just south of Masset. The second quake — 4.4 magnitude — occurred 50 minutes later approximately 154 kilometres south of Masset at a depth of three kilometres.

The last registered quake struck at 7:28 p.m. also measured 4.5 and was centred 174 kilometres south of Masset at a depth of 14 kilometres.

A 2.6 magnitude quake was measured early Friday morning off the Alaska coast about 75 kilometres south of Port Graham, AK.

No injuries or damage have been reported on the island.
