The Prince Rupert Walmart store in the Rupert Square Mall closed its doors last week due to a small fire.

Prince Rupert RCMP continue an active investigation in what is being considered a suspicious fire, started in the kids’ clothing department in the Walmart store in Rupert Square Mall on Second Avenue West.

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Jan. 23, the Prince Rupert fire department responded to a call at the store of a small fire in the department.

“It was put out pretty fast, there were no injuries, but there was some damage to the clothing and the shelving unit. Other than that, it was just a matter of cleaning up the store from the fire itself,” said fire chief Dave Mckenzie last week.

“There was some dry chemical powder from the fire extinguisher and some damaged product and they had to clean everything up.”

The store closed from Monday night into Tuesday afternoon for cleaning and RCMP members continued their investigation through the week inside the store.

The store re-opened as of late Jan. 24.
