Assault with a weapon
A man was arrested for uttering threats and assault with a weapon in Port Edward on Feb. 16. Police were called to a residence on Oceanview Drive for a report that a woman had been choked. During the altercation, a third person tried to intervene. The man assaulting the woman then uttered a threat to the third person and began to assault them. Police located the man inside the residence where he was arrested. A bail hearing was held for the suspect where he was remanded in custody until court the following week.
Two liquor store break-ins in one day
A door handle was smashed off a side entrance to a liquor store on Park Avenue. On Feb 18 at 8:53 a.m. police were called to the scene, where they noted that it appeared as though someone had used a large rock to break the door handle off. The person was not able to get into the store. Police seized evidence from the scene and are continuing an investigation.
Earlier that day, a witness saw a man break into BC Liquor Store on McBride Street. At 12:30 a.m. the man broke through the front glass entrance of
the store. A suspect matching the description was located close to the scene with three unopened bottles of liquor in their possession. There was also blood on their hands and on the bottles. He was arrested, held in custody and was released on a promise to appear with a court date. Forensic identification services processed the scene that morning.
Tires slashed
A witness reported a male wearing a dark hoodie and a black backpack slashed the tires of a vehicle in the 300 block of Fifth Avenue West on Feb. 14. He fled the scene by running toward Fulton Street. Police were unable to locate a suspect.
Groceries bagged
A woman stole $150 worth of groceries from a store on Second Avenue West on Feb. 17. Police were called to the scene at 6:00 p.m. and arrested the woman for theft under $5,000. The woman was released on scene with a court date in April.
Arrest at Civic Centre
At approximately 10:00 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre, police recognized a man who they believed had a warrant for his arrest. After checking through dispatch, police confirmed there was an endorsed warrant for the man’s arrest. He was held in custody and later released with a court date later in February.
Driving under the influence
At 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 16, a police officer was on patrol on Third Avenue West when they observed a vehicle drive through a flashing red light at Third Avenue West and Fulton Street, without stopping. The police officer pulled the vehicle over and detected signs of impairment from the driver. The officer administered a roadside screening device where the driver blew a “warn” reading and was given a three-day driving prohibition.
Between Feb. 11 and 18 there were 237 calls to police. Eighty-eight of them had an element of alcohol or drugs involved.
