Man stabbed, woman arrested

Police were waved down on McBride Street and First Avenue close to midnight on Feb. 23, where a man had a puncture wound to his abdomen.

Police arrested a woman on the scene for allegedly stabbing the man in the stomach. She was held in custody and later released on bail with a court date. The man was taken to the hospital where he had surgery. He is now in stable condition. Prince Rupert RCMP are still investigating the incident with help from the plainclothes section and the forensic identification section.

Seven people arrested for

public intoxication in one day

Between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 22, seven people from different locations in Prince Rupert were taken into custody for public intoxication.

Corporal Devon Gerrits said that people are arrested when they cannot care for themselves and have nowhere else to go and it’s typically only used as a last resort after alternative measures have been explored. He said police were unsure why the number of people arrested that day was higher than usual.

Just after midnight on Feb. 25, two women were arrested for public intoxication near PJ’s Midway on Sixth Avenue East. Police were called to the scene after witnesses said the women were trying to assault their cab driver. When police officers arrived at the scene, a large group of people were surrounding the taxi. The driver told officers that one of the women jumped out of the car when it was still moving, and fell out near the store. One of the women began threatening the driver, while the other yelled and swore at police officers.

Both women were arrested for public intoxication and held in custody until they were sober and released with no charges.

Winter conditions cause car incidents on Hwy 16

On Feb. 25, police received a report of a vehicle off the road near Oliver Lake.

“There was no damage to the vehicle and it wasn’t obstructing traffic, so when we go to a collision like that, then we just ensure that there’s nobody hurt or injured and that there’s nothing criminal that happened there,” Corporal Devon Gerrits said. “If nothing else further, then we put the all clear tape around the vehicle just so that people who come by see the tape and know somebody’s already been here and looked at the vehicle, so they don’t report it or get injured while trying to figure out what’s going on.”

He added that it’s the responsibility of the owner to get their vehicle towed if it’s not severely damaged or blocking traffic.

The day before, a vehicle rolled over onto its side and came to a stop in a ditch 60 kilometres east of Prince Rupert on Feb. 24. Both people inside the car were unharmed, and the vehicle was towed to a compound in Prince Rupert.

Gerrits said police want to remind drivers to use caution on the highway during the winter.

Driving violations

On Feb. 23, police received a call of a possible impaired driver. When they pulled the woman over on Sixth Avenue West, she failed two roadside screening tests on different devices. She was given a 90-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

When drivers are given a roadside screening test, they have the option to take a second test on another device for the benefit of the doubt, Gerrits said. However, the higher reading will be the one considered.

On Feb. 19, RCMP set up a vehicle checking point on Fulton Street and Sixth Avenue West. Two drivers were given violation tickets for not having drivers licenses, while two others failed to produce their licence. Another driver was ordered to fix a brake light.
