The Prince Rupert Fire Department and the RCMP responded to a fire at the corner of 6th Street and Fulton in the downtown core.

The fire, which caused the evacuation of the Prince Rupert Community Enrichment Society, was actually located under the sidewalk on the corner of the streets. Upon arrival late this afternoon, firefighters found a sofa, mattress and other personal affects aflame.

Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Beckwith says the fire was contained before any damage could be done to the sidewalk area, and notes that the cause of the fire is undetermined.
