Rally Update: McBride closing Saturday afternoon, David Suzuki not coming

The protest against the Enbridge pipeline in Prince Rupert will cause McBride street to close from 11:00 to 12:15, and David Suzuki cancels.

This Saturday, McBride street will be closed to traffic to make way for protest march from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm.

The march is part of a rally to protest the controversial Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline which is currently undergoing the public hearings portion of the approval process with the National Energy Board.

Protestors will be marching from Mariners Park to the Civic Centre where the rally will be taking place. While no permit for road closure has been issued yet, the city and the Ministry of Highways are expected to issue one soon. The RCMP are asking motorists to avoid using McBride during the march.

The Prince Rupert Northern View has also learned that noted scientist and environmental activist, David Suzuki, will not be attending the rally as was advertised by its organizers. Suzuki has viral bronchitis and is unable to fly to Prince Rupert for the rally.
