Kitimat RCMP confirmed last week that the fire at the Kitimat Trailer Court Jan. 19 killed one occupant of the residence in the 500 block of Columbia Ave West.

The Kitimat Fire Department was already on scene fighting the fire, which had engulfed the entire structure, when the RCMP arrived.

Two occupants were able to escape the fire, and were taken to a local hospital for treatment of fire-related injuries.

“Unfortunately, one occupant was unable to make it out and was later located in the residence deceased,” said Sergeant Rob Gardner.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. The Kitimat RCMP victims’ services have been engaged with the family.”

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, with the assistance of the Regional General Investigation section, the Kitimat Fire Department, and the Office of the Fire Commission. The BC Coroners Service is also investigating this unexpected death.

RCMP blocked traffic on the road leading to Kitimat Service Centre and advised the public to stay off the route and turned away from the route due to fears two propane tanks bursting.

For the privacy of the family of the deceased person, their name will not be released at this time.
