The Port of Prince Rupert's vice-president of commercial and regulatory affairs has accepted a position to serve as judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Andrew Mayer has worked for the port since 2008, and on Wednesday, April 12, he took up the federal government's offer to serve immediately as justice in the province from the Prince Rupert courthouse.

“Andrew’s collaborative spirit, work ethic and equanimity have been vital to the growth of the Port of Prince Rupert,” said Don Krusel, president and CEO of the Port of Prince Rupert.

As in-house counsel for the port, Mayer negotiated with the Coast Tsimshian in 2011 to compensate them for the infringements on their land rights caused by the expansion of the Fairview Terminal.

“His embodiment of integrity and legal expertise enabled the port to reach historic agreements and to reinforce key relationships. These virtues also make Andrew ideally suited to his new role, and I extend congratulations on behalf of our board, staff and myself upon his appointment to the B.C. Supreme Court," Krusel said.

He will replace Mr. Justice R.T.C. Johnston, who became a supernumerary judge, or a semi-retired judge, on December 12, 2016. Justice Mayer is replacing Justice R.T.C. Johnston, who is located in Prince Rupert, where Mayer will continue to live with his wife and four children.
