New city manager hired in Prince Rupert

Robert Long has been hired as the new city manager for the City of Prince Rupert.

The City of Prince Rupert has hired a new city manager.

During the May 13 council meeting, acting city manager Dan Rodin announced that Robert Long was hired by Prince Rupert city council at a prior in-camera meeting to fill the position. Long will take over the role of city manager effective May 15, the same day that Rodin enters retirement after six years as chief financial officer and a brief stint as acting city manager following the departure of Gord Howie.

If the name Long sounds familiar to long-time residents it's because, as councillor Nelson Kinney pointed out, Robert's father served the City in the 1950's and 1960s. Long, who was born in Prince Rupert, has spent more than 20 years working as chief administrative officer for regional districts in B.C. including 14 years in the Williams Lake area. Long most recently served as city administrator for Yellowknife beginning in July 2010 following, according to the Northern News Service, two years in Tofino and five years in Comox.

Long has Masters degree in Political Science from the University of Northern B.C.
