NDIT announces $600,000 in grants for City of Prince Rupert and Gitxaala Enterprises Corporation

Money will fund infrastructure projects

More than $600,000 in grants from Northern Development Initiative Trust will benefit the City of Prince Rupert, as well as Gitxaala Enterprises Corporation, the funding organization announced on March 2.

Each entity will receive $300,000 for its respective infrastructure projects.

The City of Prince Rupert is receiving funding to supplement the cost of restoring the former CN rail station for commercial use. Upon completion of the renovations, the property will be leased by the city to Wheelhouse Brewing Company which will move from its current location in Cow Bay.

The project will renovate the 7,200 square foot building at Rotary Waterfront Park to host an oceanfront restaurant and brewery, which will include a patio.

Work will include cosmetic enhancements as well as major structural, electrical and mechanical upgrades. The project’s funds stem from the organization’s Economic Infrastructure program, NDIT stated.

Mayor Lee Brain welcomed the news and said the funding will help continue the project’s success to create the city’s primary waterfront into an attractive and lively community space.

The $300,000, approved through the Cultural Infrastructure program, for Gitxaala Enterprises Corporation will fund the construction of a multifunctional centre designed in traditional longhouse style in the village of Lach Klan.

“The longhouse and associated facilities will support large community events, feasts, drum and dance group practices and performances, and will be available for event rentals,” NDIT stated.

The facility will also include a museum and performance venue with the intent for the location to become the cultural hub of the community.
