The funding was announced on Sept. 17 by Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Bernard Valcourt for a sewage treatment and disposal system in Metlakatla, something Chief Harold Leighton is greatly needed.

"This project is important for our community as it will be beneficial for the local environment and shell fish harvesting," he said.

Construction on the project is expected to get underway by the end of the year.
