A COLLISION between a flatbed and a fully loaded logging truck closed the highway for several hours this morning and forced a detour though the Kasiks area.Just before 8 a.m., a logging truck rear-ended a flatbed carrying an excavator, causing both cabs to jack knife on Hwy 16 near the Kasiks Wilderness Lodge entrance, about 57 km west of Terrace, according to Don Ramsay of the Ministry of Transportation. Ramsay says the accident happened on a long straight stretch of highway and didn't know why it happened.“The good news is there was no injuries,” said Ramsay. “nothing significant, no one in hospital as far as I'm aware of.”He added that the crash occurred right under one of the Drive BC web cams so it couldn't be seen on the camera image online but he was able to see the lineup of vehicles on the web cam. “I think the cab kinda swung into the left as he hit the back of the flatbed,” said Ramsay. “The excavator was already halfway across the highway and the trailer with the logs apparently missed the cab of the logging truck.”The road was closed several hours as the logs had to be removed from the logging truck, plus the equipment to do that and another truck to load the logs onto had to be brought in, he added.A detour has been opened up through the Kasiks Wilderness Lodge property, allowing for one lane of traffic to go through at a time, said Ramsay.“Really if there's any luck in this, it's that it happened between two driveways,” said Ramsay, referring to the Kasiks lodge entrance.Ramsay added it's not known when the highway will be fully re-opened. Drive BC road conditions said the highway was compact snow with slippery conditions.
