Upgraded warning system for community

In the event of a catastrophic tsunami or other life-threatening event Lax Kw’alaams is prepared to warn the community.

On Thursday afternoon, June 1, the band tested an upgraded tsunami advance warning system.

“Our previous alarm was an old air-powered siren, but the new electric alarm allows us to select a sound,” said James Henry Sr., fire chief for Lax Kw’alaams.

Henry added that as they learn the system, different sounds or voice warnings may be used to warn about fires, in addition to tsunamis.

The alarm manufacturer’s website provides examples of recorded voice messages for emergency situations, which include warnings for severe weather, hazardous materials and even terrorist attacks.

More details on the project to come.
