A Humbolt Broncos bus crash survivor will address a Prince Rupert audience as the keynote speaker on May 27 at a Play it Forward cancer fundraising event hosted at the Highliner Hotel.

The event, marked by the Prince Rupert Cancer Group (PRCG) in partnership with Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association (PRMHA), as the “event of the year,” will see Kaleb Dahlgren share his story and the stage with other speakers.

Dahlgren has faced many challenges throughout his hockey career, including childhood Type 1 Diabetes and having to overcome the mental and physical impacts of a tragic bus crash in 2018 when 16 team associates were killed and another 13 were injured, of which he was one.

Dahlgren, who was the assistant captain of the hockey team has recently released a book, “Crossroads,” detailing his ordeal and his perseverance in overcoming a traumatic brain injury caused by the accident.

The event hosts were “inspired” to team up and organize a fundraiser to not only provide support to the local hospital for much-needed equipment but as well as to assist the Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association in reducing costs for families within the hockey community.

“Join us for an evening of appetizers provided by the chefs at the Highliner Hotel. Beverages will be available for purchase as [guests] enjoy an evening filled with a live auction, a silent auction and a dessert auction,” the organizers stated.

Additionally, in a more youth friend activity, Dahlgren will be spending time with the PRMHA players on May 28 in an afternoon meet and greet where the youth will hear how hockey has affected his story and influenced his recovery journey.

There are a limited number of places still available for the evening event, at which doors open at 6 p.m., Tickets are $100 per seat or $1,000 for a table of 10 which can be purchased by emailing: playitforwardpr@gamil.com or by contacting Jen Silva of the cancer group at (250) 600 7293.
