Highway 16 landslide just outside of Prince Rupert disrupts traffic

The five kilometre section of highway is now single lane alternating traffic

UPDATE:

As of 9 p.m. on Jan. 4, Drive BC’s last update, the stretch of highway affected is still single lane alternating traffic, with only minor delays.

Road sweeping is underway between the Port Edward turnoff and the Rainbow Avalanche Gates to clear the landslide’s debris.

ORIGINAL:

A landslide approximately 12 kilometres outside Prince Rupert has affected a five kilometre section of Highway 16, with Drive BC warning of minor delays.

The landslide near the Port Edward turnoff occurred on Jan. 4 in the late afternoon, with the last Drive BC update at 3 p.m.

The small section of highway is currently single-lane alternating traffic, and Drive BC said an update will be given on Jan. 5 at 8 a.m.

Trees and boulders can be seen blocking the section of highway between the Port Edward turnoff and the Rainbow Avalanche Gates.
