Students at Charles Hays Secondary will no longer have to walk to Prince Rupert Middle School to attend band classes.

The Prince Rupert and Region Music Society and the Prince Rupert School District announced on March 12 that the contract to construct a music studio at the city's lone high school had been awarded to Eby and Sons of Prince Rupert. Construction is expected to begin shortly and the studio will be ready before the start of the 2013/2014 school year.

"The Board of Education, its staff and especially the music students at CHSS are very excited to know that they will soon have their own band room. We appreciate the effort students and their parents have made to bring their students over to the Prince Rupert Middle School band room, some of them for many year," said board chair Tina Last.

As well as creating an on-campus site for band students, the music studio will become home to groups like the Prince Rupert Community Band and the Rotary Choir.

Fundraising for the studio has fallen under the umbrella o the Prince Rupert and Region Music Society, and has been an ongoing effort. The platinum sponsors of the new studio is the Prince Rupert School District, while Ridley Terminals is a gold sponsor. Other community supporters include Northern Savings Credit Union and The Crest Hotel.
