Accident claims the life of 27-year-old Prince Rupert man

A 27-year-old man from Prince Rupert was killed in an accident on Hwy 16 yesterday.

Terrace RCMP report the man was the passenger in a Honda Civic that lost control and collided head on with an empty dual-axel gravel truck traveling east bound.The man was pronounced dead on the scene, while the 31-year-old driver of the car, also from Prince Rupert, was transported to Mills Memorial Hospital in serious condition. The 58-year-old driver of the gravel truck was transported to Mills Memorial with minor injuries.

The accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. at the 104 kilometre mark of Hwy 16 West. At the time, the highway was covered in snow and slippery. The accident resulted in a lengthy closure of the highway, which was reopened at 9:45 p.m. last night.

The name of the deceased has not been released by the BC Coroners Service and Const. Angela Rabut said the crash remains under investigation.
