The Prince Rupert Cricket Club has resolved to ramp up its efforts this year to bring the world's second most popular sport into the mainstream of the community.

At its annual general meeting March 4, the board decided unanimously to expand the program throughout the community and planned two significant steps in 2025 toward the goal.

First, they will be implementing a youth camp to introduce the game to kids.

They will also host a community introduction to cricket session at this year's Seafest.

The club has been around for several years, but the game is growing rapidly in Northwest B.C.

Last year, the Northwest BC Cricket Association joined Cricket BC and opened a cricket ground in Thornhill. The Rupert club participated in league matches there.

At home, the Rupert club has been using the ball diamonds at Roosevelt school and playing indoors during the winter.

But they want to adapt the field there to be more suitable for cricket, including installing a pitch.

The board will be meeting with the City of Prince Rupert on March 21 to stake out where they can have packed sand, storage options opportunities for levelling the grass.
