A Facebook post showing an individual shooting two handguns off a boat near Lax Kw’alaams has led to three firearm charges and two arrests, according to the Prince Rupert RCMP.

The “careless use” of the legally-owned and registered firearms was investigated by police, resulting in two warrants executed in Prince Rupert and two in Lax Kw’alaams. Three semi-automatic handguns were seized by the RCMP after the warrants were carried out.

After the social media post was first spotted by the RCMP on Nov. 22, the arrests occurred on Nov. 26, according to Prince Rupert RCMP.

Although the firearms were legally owned and registered properly by the owner, the concern was the nature they were used, Media Relations Officer Constable Brody Hemrich said.

Handling, storage and safety of firearms is the responsibility of all firearm owners.

The individuals arrested have not been named by RCMP at this time.

A report will be presented to the BC Prosecution Service, who will decide whether to lay criminal charges.

Those with information on the Facebook post are asked to contact the Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-624-2136.
