Roundabout construction in Prince Rupert delayed until 2025

The roundabout project received $18 million in funding from B.C.

The construction of a provincially-funded roundabout for the McBride Street (Hwy 16) and Second Ave W intersection in Prince Rupert has now been postponed.

Richard Pucci, deputy city manager, told council at its Sept. 9 meeting, that the ministry of transportation and infrastructure is facing challenges acquiring a property in the area which is needed before they can begin building. The work was scheduled to start in February 2024 but they are now a year behind.

"The ministry is finalizing property acquisition...Construction on the roundabout is estimated to begin in spring 2025," said the ministry.

The funding for the $18 million plan was announced in October 2023, to solve traffic congestion problems and safety issues for drivers.

As reported last year by The Northern View, the new roundabout will feature a light-up crosswalk, a three-metre-wide pathway, bicycle ramps, and splitter islands in the centre. The central island will also have flowers and decorations.

The construction of the roundabout will reveal deep pipes that are part of the city's plan to upgrade its infrastructure.
