The city announced July 29 that repairs to the 6th Avenue Bridge, which were supposed to wrap up by Sept. 2, are now taking much longer than anticipated.
The new projected re-opening date is Oct. 18.
In the council meeting on June 24, director of operations Richard Pucci said the start of the bridge repair was imminent and was expected to finish before the beginning of the school year.
However, a hold-up in material supply and contractor availability have caused delays in this critical repair work.
The city informed east area residents to be prepared for full-scale construction activity on the bridge from July 30 until mid-October.
This means both vehicle traffic lanes on the bridge and the current temporary pedestrian access will be closed.
The city has provided a map highlighting available detour routes residents can use during construction.
