Annunciation Knights sipped success from the Terry Wilson Memorial Cup they brought home after winning first place in the soccer tournament on May 26.

The annual competition held in Prince George drew 18 Grade 6 and Grade 7 teams from 10 schools within the Catholic diocese and across the province.

This year was the 10th-anniversary tournament and the first in more than four years due to the global pandemic leaving the nets empty and soccers balls in the equipment shed. The inaugural event was held in 2011. The tournament takes place each year in May to commemorate Terry Wilson, who was an avid believer that every child should have the opportunity to play sports, especially soccer.

The Knights are third-time champions of the event, having won the cup in 2014, 2016 and making this year the hat-trick.

The team played five undefeated games sending them to the finals and a 10-round shoot-out with players Laura Nguyen and Owen Bowler keeping the team alive with their kicking.

The 20-player Grade 7 team was led in goals by Captain Jacob Daniele, who used a “consistently calm and supportive demeanour,” said Rose Ciotoli, Grade 7 teacher and team coach.

Ciotoli was assisted with coaching by physical education teacher Dave Simmons and Mimmo Ciccone, who was a coach and chaperone on the away trip.
