Possible vehicle crash into hydrant causes water disruption in downtown Prince Rupert

Residents can expect traffic changes on 2nd Avenue and 4th Street while repair work continues

Prince Rupert RCMP responded to a report of a damaged fire hydrant leaking onto the roadway near 2nd Avenue and 4th Street around midnight on May 5.

"The fire hydrant appeared to have been struck by a vehicle, possibly a commercial vehicle due to the damage to the hydrant," said Corporal Madonna Saunderson.

The incident has led to extensive repair work happening on the adjacent water main on 2nd Avenue.

"There has been a temporary disruption of water between 3rd and 6th Streets along 2nd Avenue, and notification is being provided to those addresses," said the City of Prince Rupert.

Crews have reduced northbound traffic on 2nd Avenue to a single lane and closed a portion of 4th Street to carry out the repair job.

As of today, the RCMP has not identified a suspect vehicle. The investigation remains active, and the police urge anyone with information to call them.
