New flagpole installed at Prince Rupert city hall

The new aluminium pole will be more weather-resistant and make it easier to raise and lower the flag

Prince Rupert City Hall has a new flagpole.

Workers from Broadwater Industries removed the old pole and affixed a new one this morning (Oct. 24).

The city said the old pole, aside from getting unsightly, was also just too difficult to raise a flag on. The pole was originally designed on a hinge so it could be lowered to ground level to affix the flag. But since 1989, when the statue of Charles Hays was erected, they could not do it that way as the statue was right in line with the trajectory of the pole coming down.

The new aluminum pole will be more resistant to the salt air and the pulley system will make it much easier to raise the flag and bring it down in inclement weather, so the flag doesn't get tattered in the wind.
