On Sept. 13, the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) board of directors unanimously elected Peter Lantin as the new chair.

Lantin's two-year term is effective July 1, 2024.

“The Port of Prince Rupert’s future is bright, and these next several years are pivotal in its evolution as an intermodal logistics and export hub,” said Lantin.

“I am grateful to my fellow board members for entrusting me with this responsibility and I am excited to continue to advance sustainable growth initiatives and further anchor the port as a critical global trade gateway.”

According to PRPA's news release, the Port of Prince Rupert is Canada’s northernmost trade gateway on the west coast. It handles approximately $60 billion in trade value per year. It supports an estimated 3,300 direct supply-chain jobs in northern BC, $340 million in annual wages, and generates $1.4 billion for the northern B.C. economy.

Lantin, who was first appointed to the PRPA Board of Directors by the Government of British Columbia in 2019, is now in his second term as the provincial appointee. Throughout his tenure, he has held roles such as vice chair, chair of the sustainability and audit committees, and a human resources & compensation committee member.

Lantin brings over twenty years of experience in financial administration and governance. He served as the elected president of the Haida Nation from 2012 to 2018. He previously chaired the Gwaii Trust, an organization responsible for managing a perpetual fund to benefit the Haida Gwaii community.

He also served as the chief operating officer for Tricorp, an Indigenous-owned capital corporation supporting and financing economic development initiatives, local entrepreneurs and small businesses, and skills training for Indigenous communities across Northwest B.C.

“Peter has made significant contributions to the Board of Directors over the past five years and his dedication, knowledge, and expertise make him uniquely suited to assume this key leadership role,” said Shaun Stevenson, president and CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority's board of directors comprises seven members. Each level of government — municipal, provincial, and federal —appoints one member directly, while the federal government, in consultation with the Port User Nominating Committee, appoints the remaining members. Each board member serves a term of up to three years, with a maximum of three terms.
