Under Northern Health orders, the City of Prince Rupert imposed a community-wide boil water advisory on Sept. 10, after a routine water quality analysis caught bacterial presence exceeding the standard limit.

"These results are suspected to be due to impacts of construction, and the City is working to prepare a flushing program that will address this quality issue," said the City in a Sept.10 press release.

The city encourages Rupert's residents to stay updated by signing up with its municipal app and the Connect Rocket emergency alert program.

The City reminds the public that a boil water advisory requires users of the water system to heat the water to a rapid boil for at least 2 to 3 minutes before cooling and placing it in a food-grade storage container.

This is required before brushing teeth, drinking and cooking, washing vegetables for raw consumption, and making ice. Using water for bathing and washing clothes is considered safe without boiling.

Owners of public facilities are asked to display boil water notices at all sinks and drinking fountains accessible to the public. They can alternatively shut off public fountains and taps.
