UPDATE: Sherbrooke Ave fire deemed not suspicious; no injuries

Details scant pending an investigation

UPDATE

There were no injuries in a late-night fire on Sherbrooke Avenue Monday.

Fire Department Chief Jeff Beckwith said his team responded to the structure fire in the 400 block of Sherbrooke Avenue in Prince Rupert at 11 p.m. on Sept. 2.

"No one was hurt, and there were 14 firefighters on scene, with three apparatus," said Beckwith.

"RCMP and BCAS (BC Ambulance Service) also attended this incident. The fire was controlled quickly, with smoke and fire damage extending to the floor of origin. Crews dismantled the suppression equipment and returned to the station by 01:00 hours. A fire watch was posted on-site until 08:30 this morning."

The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

RCMP communications officer Brody Hemrich confirmed the fire was not suspicious, and the property representative has been notified of the incident.

Prince Rupert Fire Rescue is still on the scene of a fire that gutted a house on Sherbrooke Avenue in Prince Rupert overnight.

Firefighters were called to the residence around midnight Sept. 3 for a blaze that appears to have started on the upper floor of the two-storey dwelling.

After quelling the fire, a truck remained overnight awaiting investigators this morning. Witnesses said the building appeared to have been unoccupied at the time.

No other details are available at this time.
