Brandon Haldane is the new CEO of the Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society.

The Gitmaxmak'ay Nisga'a Society has named a successor to chief executive officer Blair Mirau.

"After a highly competitive hiring process, the Gitmaxmak’ay Nisga’a Society board of directors are proud to announce that Brandon Haldane has been appointed as the next chief executive officer (CEO)," a press release stated.

Haldane comes to the society with education and experience in both financial and entrepreneurial roles.

In addition to being a portfolio manager and credit analyst for the Bank of Montreal, Haldane has previous ties to Gitmaxmak'ay having been the society's commercial account manager at Northern Savings and Loan. A registered Nisga'a member himself, he has also served as an appointed director to the board of the Gitmaxmak'ay Economic Development Corporation.

On the entrepreneurial side, Haldane is a co-owner of Five Corners Cannabis and Cow Bay Cannabis positioning him well to manage Gitmaxmak'ay's growing portfolio of local businesses. Those now include Bob's on the Rocks, Yaga Café & Garden Co. and the Port Edward General Store.

“We are so proud to welcome Brandon Haldane aboard," said Clifford Morgan, chair of the Gitmaxmak'ay board of directors. "We are very grateful to see his willingness to continue with the aspirations of our society. We know that Mr. Haldane will do well with the experience he has in management, finance and business in continuing to move our society forward.”

A born-and-raised Rupertite, the son of Hubert and Tracy Haldane, Brandon is Laxsgiik from Laxgalts’ap.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Commerce from the University of Northern British Columbia and a post-grad certificate in Commerce – Leadership from Thompson Rivers University.

“I am honoured to be selected by the Society board as the successor to a highly regarded CEO in Blair Mirau," Haldane said. "I am eager to meet the team, learn, and begin this next chapter with the Society.”

The society's next big project is a housing development. Earlier this year, Gitmaxmak'ay announced it was purchasing the former site of the Inlander Hotel for a five-storey, 40-unit, rent-geared-to-income housing complex.

Mirau announced in June he was stepping down after 12 years with the society effective Sept. 30 to take on a new role with another yet-to-be-disclosed local organization.
