The Dance Academy of Prince Rupert celebrated its highly anticipated year end recital, “The Beat Goes On”, on June 14 and 15 at the Lester Centre of the Arts.
"With more than 150 dancers taking the stage at two unique performances, the shows were an entertaining showcase of dedication and talent," said Shauna Chandler, a DAPR instructor. The weekend featured a blend of artistry and athleticism featuring styles including ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, song and dance, modern, contemporary, and acrobatics. The academy's competitive team gave its final performances of the season, while the recreational dancers delighted the audience with their debut routines.
A highlight of the recital was the Rhythm and Dance program, which showcased four separate classes of dancers ages 3 to 5. This program was founded over 40 years ago by Teresa Mackereth.
"Starting dance at a young age fosters coordination, confidence, social skills, and a lifelong love of movement.," said Chandler.
The celebration was bittersweet for DAPR’s six graduating seniors: Laura Fudger, Henna Gill, Gracie Long, Anu Khaira, Fiona Riesen, and Nolan Robinson. Having danced since they were toddlers, the dancers took their final bow with grace and gratitude, capping off years of hard work, creativity, and shared memories.
DAPR now turns its focus to their annual summer workshop, Summer World of Dance, this August, during which plans for next year’s performances will take root.
